What is Pheno Hunting?

Breakwater Pheno hunting

Pheno hunting, aka phenotype hunting, is one of the most time-intensive processes in cannabis cultivation. It’s how growers identify standout plants with the exact traits they want to bring to market, from flavor and aroma to structure, yield and effects.

It’s important to note that not all cultivators pheno hunt. Instead, many work with clones. A clone is a cutting taken from a mother plant that has already been selected for its traits. Because clones are genetically identical to the original plant, the grower already knows how it should perform. For many cultivators, this is more predictable and faster to bring flower to dispensaries in NJ.

The Seeds

Pheno hunting always begins with seeds. Even seeds from the same genetic line can express themselves differently, much like siblings. These variations are known as phenotypes. One plant might lean heavily into terpene expression, another might grow stronger branches, and another might stand out in potency or overall balance. The goal is to find the rare plant that consistently checks every box.

Growers will generally germinate hundreds of seeds to grow mother plants, a female plant used to serve for continuous source for clones. As the seeds grow, males must be identified and removed to prevent them from pollinating the females.

Clones and Careful Tracking

While the seedlings are growing, their traits such as node-to-leaf ratio and size are also monitored and tracked. Before they reach the flowering stage, clones are usually taken from each plant and kept alive. This is critical. If a plant ends up being exceptional, those clones are the only way to preserve that exact phenotype. Every plant must be tracked carefully so the final flower can be matched back to its original clone.

For Breakwater, “We germinate [seeds], create mother plants, then take cuttings and clones that go into the grow room for selection. We do this because once you move away from the seed plant for a generation or two, you get a more definitive idea of what that phenotype will look like. Seed plants can look different from their clones. It takes longer, but it helps in the long run,” says John Bunting, Grow Team Leader / Solventless Hash Lead.

Evaluation After Harvest

Once flowering is complete, the plants are harvested, dried and cured. Only then does the real evaluation begin: the inhalation test. Growers assess cannabinoid numbers, terpene profiles, aroma, appearance, burn quality and overall experience. This is not a quick decision or a single data point. It’s a detailed comparison that relies on both testing results and hands-on experience.

Some plants show promise early but fall short once cured. Others might surprise growers with complexity or consistency that wasn’t obvious at first glance.

Confirming Consistency

Finding a strong candidate doesn’t automatically mean it’s ready for production.

Many growers will run the same phenotype again to confirm it performs consistently under the same conditions. This second run helps ensure the plant delivers the same quality every time, not just a one-off success. Only after proving consistency does a plant have a chance of moving into full production.

Why Pheno Hunting Takes So Long?

From start to finish, pheno hunting can take anywhere from one to two years. That timeline assumes a keeper is even found. In some cases, none of the plants meet the standard and the entire process starts over. According to Breakwater’s Director of Production, Kevin Wilson, “It’s a lottery. You pop that many seeds, and maybe one checks every box.”

Pheno hunting is a major commitment. It requires space, labor and time that not every indie grower can do.

Growers That Pheno Hunt

Many cultivators rely on clones already on the market, but some choose pheno hunting for health reasons or looking for a specific strain.

For example, Breakwater conducts its pheno hunting and seed runs in-house rather than bringing in cuts from outside growers. “Taking cuts from outside sources is a big risk. You don’t always know what’s coming in, whether it has a plant virus, insects, or how long it’s been quarantined,” says Kevin.

  • Breakwater – “It’s like a thousand-to-one lottery, you might pop a thousand seeds before you find that one. We’re always looking to fill gaps in the menu. Around 25 strains feels like a well-rounded lineup, but we’re always making room for something new. We keep things open and moving so when one round ends, the next has already started. It’s a continuous process that probably takes about 24 months end to end, but every month something new is coming that we started years ago. The menu is always evolving.” – Dylan McCollough, Assistant Grow Manager
  • Kusala Care – “Over the years, I’ve developed a real sense of what’s good and what isn’t. I’m a real smoker, so I know what people want and I have a better palate than most people I’ve met. I’m very particular and a little OCD about standards and how things should be. If something isn’t good, I’m not the type of person who will pretend it is.” – Justin Lee, Co-Founder/Head Cultivator
  • TerrAscend – “Pheno hunting is like treasure hunting for cannabis,” master grower Nick D’Amelio (Gas Man) says. “We start with hundreds of seeds, and the ‘winner’ is the one that checks all the boxes: stability, terpene content, cannabinoid levels and just that unbeatable flavor.” – Nick D’Amelio, Master Grower
  • Jerzey Grown – “(When we’re pheno hunting, it’s all about) trichome production—how frosty is it? Next, is whether it’s a unique pheno that stands out from the usual strains. Another big thing is the harshness of the smoke…we smoke a lot. Can I sit here and just smoke back to back to back and be okay? The taste in the terpenes as well.” -Jarred Freeman, Co-Founder
