Vintage Grass PHL: Amy Krull Brings Antique Bongs to Pure Blossom

If you’ve visited our dispensary recently, you may have noticed a few new additions to our shelves. Among them are one-of-a-kind bongs that are thoughtfully sourced and thoroughly cleaned by Vintage Grass PHL owner and bong maker, Amy Krull.

We were lucky to stumble upon these beauties at the Trenton Punk Rock Flea Market and meet the wonderful Amy!

Amy Krull

Meet Amy

Originally from Nor Cal, Amy moved to Philly a couple of years ago after being in Seattle for 15 years. She currently commutes to her job at Google in New York. “It’s kind of the best of both worlds. I don’t mind the commute and I get to see two great cities all in one day,” she said.

She started playing with the idea for Vintage Grass PHL in 2024 as a creative outlet from her day job. “I love antiques and they just don’t make things like they used to. I have a pretty big collection of antique table lighters that I find and fix up and that’s what sparked this.”

Amy wasn’t always this passionate about cannabis. In fact, when she lived in Seattle, Amy voted against legalization. “I can’t believe I voted against it, but everyone knew better than I did. The more I learned and once I tried it, I saw both its medicinal properties and fun properties. It just made sense. It’s certainly better than other sorts of ways to chill out and now I evangelize it to anyone who will listen.” says Amy.

Her shift in perspective came thanks to her brother and a close friend. They both were open about their experiences and helped educate her. These days, she’s an avid cannabis advocate and even has a favorite strain. “My favorite strain of all time is called Allen Wrench and I’ve only found it in the PNW (Seattle). It’s hard to find it, but I’m determined to get someone to source it on the East Coast,” says Amy.

From Bargains to Bongs

“Antiquing is super fun and the places I end up in are wild,” she said. “I’ve been in some really sketchy spots around the world looking for pieces…and things that would be safe to smoke out of. Many old decanters are perfect. But I also look for something interesting that I would put out on my table.” She even hold up the piece to know how it would feel.

Once she’s finds the right piece that is sturdy enough, the real work begins. First comes the deep clean, which she swears is the most labor-intensive part. “There’s no way I’m gonna produce something that’s even got a shred of grime from 1968 in there. I want it all out and I want it sterile,” says Amy.

After that, it’s all about tracking down the hardware (downstem, bowl and grommet), which she usually gets from her local vape shop down the street or online. Then comes the trickiest part: putting it all together without breaking anything. Finally, before any of the pieces are ready to sell, she always tests the pull with water.

A Bong Worth Displaying

For Vintage Grass PHL, it’s more than selling bong. It’s helping normalize the conversation around cannabis. “They bring smoking into much more classy public view,” explains Amy. “Let’s bring this out into the open and let’s talk about it. Even if you don’t use Vintage Grass bongs to smoke, just having one on display can spark the conversation.”

Clean Your Bong

Let’s be honest—nothing ruins good flower faster than a dirty bong. You can have the best product on the market, but if it’s filtered through old water and a resin-caked downstem, it’s going to taste…off.

When it comes to cleaning, Amy keeps it simple. She recommends water bottle cleaning tablets or a mix of rubbing alcohol, water and epsom salts (just make sure to rinse well!). To get in the corners, she suggest using a very soft brush to get in there. but to not too hard to break the downstem.

Pro tip: “Keep it natural. Those tablets that people is probably as artificial as I’d get.”
