How To Smoke Joints In The Wind

For fall forages, porch puffs, backyard bonfires and every other good idea ruined by the uninvited gust.

Pure Blossom

Welcome, fall! Honestly, this might be our favorite time of year. The humidity is gone, the layers are back (year three of our PB hoodies and they’re still as comfy as day one). It’s the sweet spot before the holiday chaos kicks in, and the perfect excuse for a sesh outside and to appreciate the fall foliage.

There’s just one thing that can wreck a good fall sesh: the wind.

Battling the breeze takes skill, determination, and apparently a degree in aerodynamics. By the ninth relight of the same joint, you start to wonder if there’s a better way.

Before the cold sends us into hibernation, here are a few tricks for getting your joint lit.

Tip #1: Don’t Fight The Wind

Your first instinct is to keep flicking the lighter until you win. Sometimes you do. Other times you end up with a canoe.

We suggest walking with the wind. Your body becomes a windbreak and it’s easier to keep the flame stable.

Get it lit first. Then carry on.

Tip #2: Master Your Cup

If the wind is still winning, it’s time for the second line of defense: your hand. Cupping it around the flame creates a little pocket of calmer air, which can save the day when the gusts refuse to cooperate.

The key is to cup loosely. Keep your free hand around the lighter and the tip of the joint, with room for air and plenty of space between the flame and your skin.

Tip #3: Beyond the Bic

We love our Bics, but when the wind picks up, it’s time to call in the big guns. Here are two wind-proof alts:

  1. Torch lighters – Think of these as the Bic’s tougher older sibling and stubborn enough to hold its ground in the wind. NOTE: these burn much hotter than a regular lighter, so you don’t need to put the flame directly against your flower. Give it a little space and rotate as you light.
  2. Electric lighters – These sleek gadgets use an electric arc to make heat, which means there’s nothing for the wind to blow out. Bonus: they’re rechargeable.

Tip #4: Gear Up With A PB Hat

Every fall wardrobe needs a go-to hat and, lucky for you, ours doubles as a portable wind shield. They look good, they feel good and they’re built to be worn every day. Browse our hats

Tip #5: Skip the Flame Entirely

At a certain point, you have to know when you’ve been beaten. Enter the Pax Mini 2 Dry Herb Vape. The PAX MINI 2 uses conduction heating, which warms your flower inside a small oven until it releases vapor without combustion, aka no smoke.

When you light a joint, you’re burning the flower and paper. That combustion creates smoke along with ash and other byproducts of burning plant material. A dry herb vape works at lower temperatures, heating the flower enough to release cannabinoids and aromatic compounds like terpenes as vapor without actually setting the plant material on fire. It also allows you to taste more of the flower’s natural flavors.
